Shorea lumutensis

Botanical Name: Shorea lumutensis Sym.
Vernacular Name: Balau Putih
Other Names: Damar Laut (Dindings, Perak), Balau Bukit.

Distribution: This is an endemic species only known with certainty from coastal hills (above 100m) in the Dindings, Perak; in this restricted habitat it was once common, but is now restricted to the small remaining area of primary forest, where it is critically endangered.


Form: A medium-sized to large tree, occasionally exceeding 3 m girth but usually much smaller; buttresses short and stout; bole grey-brown, irregularly longitudinally fissured (rather like meranti pa'ang).


Leaves: Elliptic-oblong, about 13 x 6 cm but very variable, coriaceous, nerves about 14 pairs and prominent beneath, usually markedly glaucous on the undersurface.
